Tollywood has perfected the 'war of words' between its various stars and hardly a film goes by in which the presiding star does not take a dig at a couple of his competitors. Sandalwood, which has kept a safe distance so far, from this trend seems to be slowly inching towards showing this rivalry on screen. Though some stars have had public showdowns in the last couple of years, this had not filtered down to their films.
But Yash's latest film, Mr & Mrs Ramachari, is breaking the trend. The recently released trailer of the film has Yash saying, "Naanu barotanaka bereyavara hawa. Naanu banda mele nande hawa." (Roughly meaning, 'Others have shone till now. It is my time now'). Though not directed at any one particularly, the online Kannada film communities have not taken it kindly and already a for-and-against war of words has broken out. Yash, however, has refused to speak to the media about the issue.
On the face of it, it is just another dialogue from the film. But privately other stars are seeing red. One star had this to say, "Those who climb fast, drop faster. So it is better to be humble."
NO DIG, SAYS DIRECTOR
Santhosh Anandram, the director of Mr & Mrs Ramachari, however, dismissed any reference to other stars. "The particular dialogue is between the protagonist and his rival in the film. There is no reference to any other actor. Things will be clear once the film is released."
The only time two stars had clashed at each other through film dialogues was nearly a decade ago. While in one film Darshan had the dialogue that he did not become a police officer by studying in a convent but a corporation school, Sudeep's next film had the dialouge that he studied in a convent.
Yash is seen as the biggest rising star in the last few years. Though he has not shaken the trinity of Darshan, Puneeth Rajkumar and Sudeep yet, he has nonetheless been the most consistent in box-office appeal. His career started in 2007 and Moggina Manasu was his first hit. But the honours were shared by a host of actors though he won the Filmfare for the best supporting actor. The rocky career did not strike big till 2011 with Kirataka's success. Drama, directed by Yogaraj Bhat, was the turning point. From then on, he has managed to deliver one big hit after the other withGoogly, Raja Huli and Gajakesari. With four films, one a bigger hit than the previous, he suddenly emerged as a big star.
The new generation of actors has tried to gain the sup port base of stars of the earlier generation by making films named after the yesteryears stars or their films. Ramachari is the character that made Vishnuvardhan a star in Naagarahaavu back in the early 1970s. Yash plays a fan of Vishnuvardhan in the film and also sports a tattoo of the late star for the role.
But nothing matches what happens in Tollywood. Pawan Kalyan's obvious reference to Mahesh Babu in his dialogues include, "Look Siddappa, I am like lion. The only difference being lions don't shave, but I do." Mahesh Babu's counter to this has him saying, "I am not a dialogue writer to give a counter to every film dialogue. I am a fighter." To the lion remark, he had another counter, "Everyone is comparing themselves to lions and tigers. But only rats are coming out."
