It has been nearly two decades since megastar Rajinikanth's Tamil movie Baashha was released. Now, we hear that the sequel to Baashha is in the offing with director Suresh Krissna finalising the script. However, the same is yet to be okayed by Rajinikanth.
Upon release in 1995, Baashha, which chronicles the life of a veteran don leading the life of an auto-rickshaw driver in Chennai, smashed all box-office records for that year. On several occasions, Rajinikanth had evinced interest in working on the sequel of the movie. However, the plans did not materialize because of various reasons.
"Now that Rajini sir's health is fine and is acting in movies regularly, Suresh Krissna wants to revive the Baashha sequel. He is aware that it is not easy to get Rajini sir's nod for the sequel. So, he wants everything to be right before approaching him to narrate the script," a source close to the director said. The star actor's movie Lingaa is set for release in December and there are speculations about him acting in the sequel toEnthiran next year. Another film with director K S Ravikumar is also on the cards. It is not clear which of these projects will the superstar take up next. "Rajini sir is aware that script work for the sequel toBaashha is on. If at all the project materializes, it will happen only during the second half of 2015. There are plenty of producers willing to take up the project, but only Rajini sir will have the final say," the source added.
There are several counter arguments to the sequel to Baashha. While a few Tamil film personalities feel that it is too late for a sequel to Baashaa, several others think that the plot has outlived its purpose.
"It becomes difficult to justify Baashaa's role in the sequel. Few sequels have succeeded in Tamil. One has to be extra careful with a sequel involving a star like Rajinikanth," said noted film critic V Kumar. Another contention could be Suresh Krissna's capability as some of his recent projects have failed at the BO. He has not directed any movie in the last one year.
