Shanthakumari is the new Mayor

Her deputy is K. Ranganna from Kamakshipalya
N. Shanthakumari representing Moodalapalya ward and K. Ranganna from Kamakshipalya ward were elected unopposed as the city’s 48th Mayor and 49th Deputy Mayor respectively, on Friday. Both posts were reserved for the general category.

Many senior BJP councillors had thrown in their hats in the ring. The ruling party in the civic body had taken more than four days to decide on the candidates for the two posts. The names were finalised hours before the election was scheduled.
While Ms. Shanthakumari was backed by MLC V. Somanna, the new Deputy Mayor was backed by Rajajinagar MLA S. Suresh Kumar and Bangalore Central MP P.C. Mohan, sources said. Soon after the names were finalised, the duo rushed from the residence of Bangalore South MP H.N. Ananth Kumar to the BBMP to submit their nomination papers. They will be in office for just about eight months, as against the normal tenure of one year, because the five-year term of this council comes to an end in April 2015.
Ms. Shanthakumari, a three-time councillor, said, “There will be no time even to sleep. I will put in long hours and not count the days.”
