AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisihas kicked up a row by questioning the award of country's highest civilian honour Bharat Ratna to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Owaisi, a Hyderabad MP, also objected to Padma Vibhushan being awarded to BJP patriarch and former deputy prime minister L K Advani. Owaisi's stand on the decisions of the Narendra Modi government on bestowing the top civilian honours on Vajpayee and Advani was condemned today by the BJP which said he was trying to give a "communal" colour.
"How can the country's second highest civilian honour, Padma Vibhushan, be given to Advani who was facing criminal cases (in connection with the Babri masjid demolition)," Owaisi said at a book release function here last night. "The same L K Advani who spread destruction in the country with his 'Rathyatra'...This could probably be the first instance of Padma Vibhushan being given to a person who is facing criminal cases," the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen(AIMIM) leader said.
