Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday returned a hung verdict with PDP as a dominant party that can tie up either with the Congress or BJP in forming the Government as BJP and its allies appeared headed for capturing power in Jharkhand.
PDP, which holds the key to form the next government is leading on 29 seats. Meanwhile, BJP is leading on 25 seats, National Conference on 16, while Congress is ahead on 11 seats. Other parties are leading on 6 seats.
The ruling National Conference suffered a rout plummeting from 28 seats it won in 2008. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah lost from Sonawar, one of the two seats he contested from while won in Beerwah.
The five-phase election, which saw 66% voting - the highest turnout after 1987 despite boycott calls by separatists and militants, will be a litmus test as much for BJP, which is making its first serious foray in Jammu and Kashmir to form a government, as for Congress, which will be hoping to stay relevant in the state politics following the massive rout in Lok Sabha polls earlier this year.
