Good Governance Day row: Essay contest 'online and voluntary '; schools will remain shut on Christmas, says Centre after Parliament uproar

HRD Minister Smriti Irani on Monday took to Twitter to lash out at an English language daily's report which said that CBSE and Navodaya schools will remain open on Christmas, December 25 to celebrate 'Good Governance Day'.

The English language daily on Monday had reported that the Centre wants CBSE to carry out activities such as an essay competition, quiz contest etc. The report also claimed that the Navodaya Vidyalay has given out a circular to their school to conduct essay competitions on December 24-25 for classes I to X.
However, terming the report as a 'deliberate mischief', Smriri Irani said that the essay competition would be held online and that participation would be voluntary. She said that the schools will remain closed for Christmas.
Amidst Opposition uproar in the Parliament over the report of schools being ordered to remain open on Christmas Day, the Centre too on Monday clarified that no such instruction has been issued and only an online essay competition on the subject is being organised.
"The report is factually false," Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said in Rajya Sabha after Opposition parties raised the issue. HRD Minister Smriti Irani "has informed me that no such instruction has been issued, no school will function (that day). Only an online essay competition (is being organised). That's all," Jaitley said.
Raising the issue, Sitaram Yechury (CPI-M) said there are reports that schools have been asked to remain open on December 25 to observe Good Governance Day. "There are orders from the government," he said.
