Newly-appointed Tamil Nadu Congress chief E.V.K.S Elangovan on Thursday said actor Rajinikanth should not enter politics.

"Rajinikanth should not come to politics at all. This is my opinion. He has fans in all political parties. He is widely respected by the Tamil Nadu people,” Mr Elangovan told PTI.

The actor, who came out in support of erstwhile Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) floated by G.K. Vasan's father G.K. Moopanar in 1996, should not confine himself to a small circle, he said.

Mr. Elangovan, however, added, "All citizens who are committed to secularism, including Rajinikanth, are welcome to join Congress.”

Mr. Vasan, who broke away from the Congress last week to chart his own course in the State, too has reportedly sought the support of the actor, whose backing to the TMC at the height of anti-AIADMK campaign on the corruption plank helped it emerge victor in the 1996 elections in alliance with DMK.

When Moopanar founded the TMC in 1996 after quitting Congress, Mr. Rajinikanth had appealed to the people to vote for the DMK and its allies including the Tamil Maanila Congress by saying that, "even God cannot save Tamil Nadu if Jayalalithaa is voted back to power”.

Since then, there has been speculation and demands from political parties urging him to join their respective outfits.

Asked if he would try to align with DMDK in the 2016 Assembly polls, the TNCC chief said, "He (Vijayakant) is a good friend of mine and the DMDK chief too has a lot of respect for Congress party leaders.”

When life's a 'Cumberbitch': The unbearable burden of being Sophie Hunter

Editor's Note: 'Cumberbitch' is the colloquial term that fans of the actor Benedict Cumberbatch call themselves.

By Indian aunty standards, the engagement of a 38-year-old "never married” man should be greeted by nothing other than sheer relief. Chalo, god be praised, finally, before all our teeth fell out.

However when that 38-year-old is Benedict Cumberbatch, the reaction is one long howl of disbelief heard around the world as "Cumber-bitches” everywhere collectively wail "Nahiiiiiin”. That shriek drowned out even the groans of Democrats in America pulverized in the mid-term polls. In India, Rahul Gandhi wondered if he was once again a contender for the most eligible bachelor crown.

But now that the grim reality of that simple old-fashioned formal announcement in The Times has finally sunk in, Cumber-bitches everywhere can reflect on what it really means. It's not the end of the world. In fact, while Sophie Hunter might become mother to the Cumber-pups, she's hardly the luckiest girl in the world.

Marrying the modern world's most unlikely sex symbol, means Sophie Hunter has just doomed herself to 24x7 inquisition by media. Her looks will be scrutinized with a magnifying glass mostly to find flaws to establish that she's obviously not good enough for the "sexiest man alive". Her every move will be dogged by paparazzi the way Princess Diana was and even more since Shy Di did not have to deal with rampaging social media. If she ever makes the mistake of trying to grab a coffee in sweatpants, without makeup and her hair still tousled from bed, she will be panned, pilloried and her photos shared around the world with cutting and cruel captions. (The same look for Benedict would be just so "unaffected” and "adorable” of course). Even worse she will be Mrs Cumberbatch in a world where women everywhere, and some men, will be only too happy to try and seduce her husband.

We have already learned everything about her educational qualifications – she can sing in French, read modern languages at Oxford, has acted in a Dr. Who spin-off and directed some offbeat plays including a puppet version of Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic expedition.

Interesting. Quirky. Intelligent. Not exactly Amal Alamuddin aka Mrs George Clooney – drop dead gorgeous and an internationally renowned human rights lawyer.
