Flipkart's first outing in the tablet world failed to impress, but the company shows no signs of giving up as it continues to add more devices to its portfolio.
The top model in Flipkart's lineup is Digiflip Pro XT911, which offers an 8.9-inch Full HD display, metal-and-glass body, 2GB RAM, Intel processor, 5MP rear camera etc — all at Rs 14,999. But does the new tablet work better than its predecessor or falters when put under pressure? We find out in out Digiflip Pro XT911 review...
Build and Design
Digiflip Pro XT911 is the top tablet from Flipkart and, thus, uses premium materials. The frame on the sides is made of aluminium, while the back is made of scratch resistant glass and features Intel and Digiflip Pro branding. Overall, the tablet looks a little chunky due to its thickness, but it is among the better looking budget tablets out there.
With 483gms weight, Digiflip Pro XT911 feels a little heavy, especially when held in the hand for long periods. The volume and power buttons are placed on the right (in portrait view), along with the microSD and sim card slots. On the top are the microUSB port and 3.5mm headset jack. The tablet features two speakers, placed on the top and bottom.
With slight round edges, the tablet looks decent.
Display
The tablet has an 8.9-inch IPS display (1200x1920p) and is good to look at. The tablet has punchy colours as well as good viewing angles and text, videos etc appear sharp. Sunlight legibility is okay, as you can make out the text without much effort even on a clear day.
Software
Digiflip Pro XT911 runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean which will get its upgrade to Android 4.4 KitKat in the near future, according to Flipkart. The software is stock Android and so you do not get any bells and whistles that other devices in this price range offer. The tablet comes with preloaded apps like Flipkart, Flipkart Ebooks, Myntra etc.
Camera
The camera is not really the high point of the tablet. It clicks average quality pictures in both daylight and artificial light.
It has a 5MP rear camera and a 2MP front camera. The rear camera does not come with an LED flash so it's not possible to click acceptable pictures in low light conditions.
It has normal and panorama capture modes and lets you choose between filters, such as sepia, aqua etc.
Photos captured through it are functional at best and suitable for casual sharing on social networks. The front camera is good for video chats.
Performance
Digiflip Pro Tablet is powered by 2GHz dual-core Intel Atom processor with HyperThreading technology, which allows the processor to work as quad-core unit when enough data needs to be processed. The Intel chip and the 2GB RAM come together to ensure there is no lag while performing most tasks, like quickly switching from one app to the other or playing high-definition games.
The tablet comes with 16GB internal storage which is expandable up to 32GB via SDcard. The connectivity suite includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G. Making voice calls with this tablet is easy, but lugging it around for that purpose is a pain due to its weight. Due to its weight, we went with a Bluetooth headset rather than earphones while making calls via this tablet.
As the display is pretty good, the multimedia experience on this tablet is enjoyable. You can play any file format on it and even high-resolution videos play without any jarring. Audio output is decent, but sound quality is not up to the mark.
The tablet sports a 6,500mAh battery and lasted about one-and-a-half day with mixed use. It lasted 4-5 hours while playing HD videos on a loop.
Verdict
Priced at Rs 14,999 Digiflip Pro XT911 is a big-screen tablet that offers a lot of features at a budget. With features like Full HD display, 2GB RAM and voice-calling, the tablet offers the features of high-end tablets at an affordable price. It has its own problems, like an old version of Android, weight and poor camera, but there are only a few tablets under Rs 15,000 that offer a similar set of features.
In the same price range is Lenovo Yoga 8 B6000, which has half the RAM and smaller screen size compared to the Flipkart tablet.
In our view, Digiflip Pro XT911 won't disappoint you with its sharp display and good battery life.
