Rage and frustration was palpable on Friday in front of the private school in East Bengaluru, where a Hindi teacher allegedly raped a six-year-old girl on two successive days earlier this week.
A few concerned parents turned up at the campus gates, though they had received an email from the school that it would remain closed. Anger was writ on their faces, they were unsure how they could ensure their children didn't go through similar trauma. School officials were not around to allay their fears.
An enraged parent of a Class I student said the culprit had spoilt the name of the school. "The quality of education is good, but the school has failed to ensure safety of the children," he said.
Ganesh K, another parent, said the school should reopen only after all the prescribed safety guidelines are implemented. With school officials literally abdicating their responsibility, it was a virtual free-for-all in front of the campus on Friday.
The day began with a social organization staging a demonstration in front of the school. Soon, a group of BJP workers arrived on the spot and staged another protest. Parents, meanwhile, held a meeting with local MLA S Raghu and police commissioner MN Reddi. They decided to send their kids to school from Wednesday.
Parents will be holding a meeting with the school management on Monday. Raghu said parents have requested that the uniform for girls be changed to chudidhar from the next academic year, and more female staffers be recruited.
"We are putting in all efforts to boost the confidence of panicky parents so they send their children to school from Wednesday," said Raghu.
School officials remained inaccessible to clarify when they are reopening on Monday, or whether the school will remain closed.
WILL ENSURE SMOOTH PROBE: SCHOOL
We have immediately taken steps to inquire into the complaint and also requested parents to have a medical examination done on the child. Our school has provided all information as required by the jurisdictional police, to assist in the investigation.
Our educational institution is absolutely non-tolerant towards such inhuman conduct. We would like to extend our support to the relevant authorities to bring justice to the child and her family, and the culprit to be severely punished. We are deeply hurt by the news that has come to us and would like this episode to be concluded at the earliest. We will declare the school closed on October 31 to ensure there is no inconvenience caused to our parents and children and to facilitate smooth investigation. During this traumatic period, we stand by the family and our student. Our cooperation during the entire process of investigation will be unstinted.
MANAGEMENT NOT CULPABALE: TOP COP
We have not found any culpability of the school management regarding the sexual abuse of the 6-year-old girl by her Hindi teacher. If one school staffer commits a crime, we can't generalize and say all the 4,000 to 5,000 schools in the city are in the wrong. We are taking precautionary measures. I don't want Bengalureans to think there's a general deterioration of the situation.
