With over 16.4 million internet users,Mumbai tops the list of Indian cities with the most number of internet users and is miles ahead of other major cities like Bangalore, Chennai and Kolkata. The national capital, Delhi, however, registered the highest growth in users with around 12.15 million on the web this year compared to 8.1 million users in 2013.
Overall, the top four metros - Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Bangalore - have a 23% penetration of Internet users in India. The numbers were revealed in the annual study of the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI).
As per IAMAI's annual study, Mumbai had 16.4 million internet users and was closely followed by Delhi with 12.15 million internet users this year compared to 12 million internet users in Mumbai and 8.1 million in Delhi in 2013.
Such is the stark difference between number of internet users in other metropolitans in that cities like Kolkata, Bangalore and Chennai together have around 17.84 million users only. Kolkata is third on the list this year, and has 6.27 million internet users. Bangalore (4th) has 5.99 million internet users and Chennai (5th) has 5.58 million internet users.
In 2013, Kolkata had 4.7 million, Bangalore had 4.4 million and Chennai had 4.5 million internet users. The data clearly shows that apart from Delhi, Kolkata too has also seen a high growth as it jumped two places from from fifth position last year to third position this year.
But in terms of growth, Delhi clearly tops the list as it witnessed a huge jump in growth of internet users - of nearly 50%- among all the top metros in India.
"Mumbai witnessed a 37% growth, Bangalore saw a growth of 36 percent, Hyderabad and Pune saw a growth of 34% while Kolkata and Ahmedabad witnessed a growth of 33% each," the study revealed.
Among the major eight metropolitan cities, Chennai, with only 24% growth, reported the the lowest growth rate.
Among the smaller metros, with a population of more than one million, Surat, Jaipur, Lucknow, Vadodara and Nagpur are the top five cities with highest number of internet users.
