According to a recent study, regular consumption of fish oil supplements can significantly reduce the rate of cognitive decline and improve brain function in older adults.
The study published in Alzheimer's & Dementia was conducted by researchers at Rhode Island Hospital and was the first to report an association between fish oil and structural changes in the brain.
The study analyzed a group of 229 cognitively normal older adults who were; 397 adults diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment; and 193 adults suffering from Alzheimer's disease (AD). The study found that the consumption of fish oil supplements was associated with lower rates of cognitive decline and brain atrophy in older adults.
Lori Daiello, the principal investigator from Rhode Island Hospital said "Participants with normal cognition who reported taking fish oil supplements demonstrated less brain shrinkage in key neurological areas compared to those who did not use the supplements."
