Blacklisted firm supplying insecticide to stop dengue, claims BJP

In the wake of a rise in dengue cases in the city, a BJP corporator has alleged that a particular insecticide which is being used to destroy mosquito larvae in the city is of inferior quality, and that the company supplying it has already been blacklisted by other cities. "It is because of this ineffective insecticide that dengue cases are on the rise," alleged BJP corporator Manoj Kotak, demanding the resignation of BMC chief Sitaram Kunte on the issue.
So far, nine dengue deaths have been recorded, while 11 is the estimated number. The BMC has been periodically prosecuting societies and residents if breeding spots are found in their homes.
Kotak, while speaking to media persons on Friday alleged that the BMC administration is not serious about the health of the common Mumbaikar. In order to destroy dengue larvae, the civic body had given a contract worth Rs 27 crore to M/s Universal Organics, M/s Neeta Paul Industry, but since the company had used insecticides of inferior quality, the company was blacklisted by Pune and Surat.
Kotak also alleged that one of the companies did not have the licence to sell medicine in Maharashtra, and the Madhya Pradesh government has also made similar allegations against it.
The BMC had fined the company after low quality Pairethram Extract was found in the insecticide. "Even after imposing a fine of Rs 68 lakh, how was the contract given to the same company?" Kotak asked.
Additional municipal commissioner, Sanjay Deshmukh said that an inquiry will be conducted.
