While it's a little difficult to adapt to change in general, there's something about old city names that gets us every time. Take a look at 14 cities that have been renamed, but continue to be called by their former names.
1. Puducherry
makemytrip.com
Puducherry, or Pondicherry, was inspired by French architecture. The city was renamed Puducherry in 2005, but locals still refer to it as Pondy or Pondicherry.
2. Guwahati

Guwahati was formerly known as Gauhati, and the locals still can't get over the old name!
3. Cochin

Cochin and Kochi are equally popular among the residents, although the city was officially renamed Cochin in 1990.
4. Kolkata

Of course, Kolkata residents refer to the city as Calcutta because the city was renamed only recently. Interestingly, Kolkata means the land of goddess Kali and is often called Kalikata too!
5. Ajitgarh

Come on now, how many of us really knew this one? Ajitgarh is actually Mohali. Surprise.
6. Thiruvananthapuram

If one must change a name, it would be more efficient to change it to something simpler. No wonder everyone still calls the city Trivandrum.
7. Mumbai

Everyone still calls it Bombay and no one seems to mind!
8. Chennai

People have largely accepted this name, but some still prefer Madras. For instance, IIT Madras hasn't become IIT Chennai. Not yet, anyway.
9. Sri Potti Sriramallu Nellore

Again, simple works best! Nellore will probably stay Nellore.
10. Thoothukudi

This major sea port in India is still known as Tuticorin.
11. Rupanagar

Surprisingly, Ropar was renamed Rupanagar in the 11th century. But old habits die real hard and locals still prefer Ropar!
12. Vijaypura

Bijapur was renamed only on November 1, 2014. It's going to take a while for this one to catch on.
13. Bengaluru

Bangalore or Bengaluru, locals are okay with both the names!
14. Alappuzha

The tourist district Alleppy was renamed in 1990, but both tourists and locals don't really seem to acknowledge it.
